This edition of Dag in de Branding revolves around ‘contrasts’. In The Grey Space, an innovative location for the visual arts, two spaces are juxtaposed. The Matangi Quartet will perform subtle chamber music on the open upper floor of the gallery. Downstairs, in the basement, Barbara Ellison and Francisco Lopez will let the decibels resound in an adventurous sonic experience. The contrast will also be reflected in the interaction between music and the visual arts. The Matangi Quartet will engage in a dialogue with the exhibition on display, while Ellison and Lopez will get material inspiration from the sounds of the chalk they will use when drawing on the blackboard.
Lankhoorn will create a musical and visual contrast in the Nieuwe Kerk by dividing the church into two. The New European Ensemble will give a chamber music concert on the right-hand side featuring work by female composers. On the left, Lankhoorn will perform a whimsical piece for piano and electronics by Petra Strahovnik, commissioned by Dag in de Branding Festival and written specially for Saskia Lankhoorn.
The contrast silence – noise is the theme of a performance with work by Marina Poleukhina, Barbara Ellison and Maya Verlaak in the garden of the Nieuwe Kerk: students from the Academy for Music and the Performing Arts (Tilburg) will demonstrate how much sound twenty electric guitars are capable of producing.
