No More Masterpieces is an exclusive collaboration between the Parisian Ensemble Intercontemporain and the Dutch Video Collective 33 1/3, with a performance of Concerto Séraphin by German composer Wolfgang Rihm as starting point. The intriguing score by Rihm is a homage to Antonin Artaud, the famous surrealist playwright who railed at bourgeois art in his essay En finir avec les chefs-d’oeuvre (‘We must put an end to this idea of masterpieces reserved for a so-called elite’). His answer was The Antitheatre and The Theatre of Cruelty.
Wolfgang Rihm has taken this premise and translated it into expressive music, distinguished by unconventional instrumentation, lyrical lines and a palpable emotional tension. The Video Collective 33 1/3 likewise intuitively went on a quest to find the essence of Artaud’s universe.
Ensemble Contemporain will be performing for the first time in The Hague since their inception forty years ago.
