Call for proposals: maker-in-residence

Festival Dag in de Branding, the The Hague based festival for contemporary music, offers a two-year trajectory for makers-in-residence, to work on their artistic development.
For the period September 2024-June 2026, Festival Dag in de Branding is looking to coach and support an onstage performer/maker.

Are you a musician, performer/maker, co-creator, composer-performer or ensemble and are you under 35?
Do you want to work on your artistic development as maker in a professional environment?
We would like to meet you!

You are / you have:
– you are living and working in the Netherlands
– you have a clear idea about your artistic ambitions
– you have clear learning goals that are connected to these artistic ambitions and fit into a 2-year residency
– you have some experience/track record in organising your own projects
– you understand how to involve different audience groups in your projects
– you are not enrolled in a BA or MA programme in music at the moment or in the coming two years
– you are younger than 35 years of age (for ensembles: average age of the members is < 35).

Festival Dag in de Branding offers:
– a residency of two years in which you work on your learning goals in different projects and presentations, within the festival and/or in other settings
– the opportunity to test your ideas in practice, try them out, evaluate them and apply what you have learned in subsequent editions and/or projects. This, including the support of various coaches and feedback from the festival’s committed audience, will enable you to take a big step forward in your development.
– professional coaching and mentorship
– a wide professional network of venues, ensembles, institutions and artists to collaborate with.

How to apply:
You can apply for the 2024-2026 residency by submitting the following, before 10 May 2024:
– short biography plus your contact information
– explanation of learning goals and artistic ambitions for the residency: what do you want to learn or work on, what do you want to develop, and why? How will this help you in your career in the future?
– some suggestions of coaches, mentors, musicians, co-creators to involve: who can help you achieve your learning goals, and how/why?
– methodology: suggestion of (type of) project(s) in which to work on your learning goals: how, in what kind of projects, do you think you can achieve your learning goals?
– one or more names plus contactdetails of professionals in the music sector, who would be willing to give a recommendation if asked.
– minimum of 3 links (audio or AV) to examples of previous works/projects

Combine this information into one pdf of max 4 pages A4, and send it to info@dagindebranding.nl before 10 May.

A professional jury will choose the maker in residence who best fits Festival Dag in de Branding after reviewing all submissions. An interview is part of the application procedure. In the beginning of June you will hear whether you have been selected for an interview, which will take place in the week 17-21 June 2024.

The organisation
Festival Dag in de Branding is organised by the Johan Wagenaar Stichting (JWS), an organisation dedicated to the development of new music. Since its foundation in 1947 JWS has maintained a policy of giving composers pride of place, including giving numerous commissions and awards. JWS administers the music awards of the Municipality of The Hague, the best-known of which is the Johan Wagenaar Award for lifetime achievement. JWS helps to create performance opportunities for contemporary music by organising concerts and festivals and by providing a platform for artistic collaborations.
