Trombonist Sebastiaan Kemner is guest curator of the 78th edition of Dag in de Branding. Under the motto Luciano Berio and the Trombone, he places the trombone at the centre of the festival. Berio’s iconic Sequenza V forms a common thread and is heard alongside music by, among others, Martijn Padding, Sofia Gubaidulina, Julius Eastman and Salvatore Sciarrino.
The edition opens on Friday evening with Kemner and the New European Ensemble, featuring, among other things, the premiere of Echoes from behind and a new trombone concerto by Martijn Padding. On Saturday, the instrument appears everywhere: both inside and outside the concert hall. In the morning, we perform R. Murray Schafer’s iconic Music for Wilderness Lake outdoors; a piece for twelve trombones. Immediately afterwards, Kemner plays works by Berio and Nicholas Moroz at Theater aan het Spui. Those who wish can stay a little longer at Spuiplein, where the acclaimed Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir performs music by, among others, Berio, Glass and Pärt at Amare.
Through special collaborations and new music, Kemner ultimately leads us to Korzo, where, in Concert in the Dark, he further explores the expressive possibilities of his instrument.
