Choreographer John Neumeier shows us a refined interpretation of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale The Little Mermaid (1836). He delves into deeper themes such as conflicting love and loss. A visually stunning ballet, this contemporary production features striking costumes and sets – inspired in part by traditional Japanese theatre. John Neumeier interweaves elements from Anderson’s biography in his choreography. The writer himself plays a role in the ballet. The feelings of the little mermaid and her tragic fate become a reflection of Andersson’s own longing. They are one – creator and creation. It is the writer’s love for his ‘little mermaid‘ that gives her a soul and makes her immortal, as she in turn immortalizes him. Lera Auerbach composed the music for Neumeier’s story.

In the choreography of John Neumeier’s ballet Tatiana, the story of a young girl who grew up in the Russian countryside comes to life. She experiences her first great love and we become witnesses to her dream, desire, memory, premonition and the inevitable reality. Tatiana’s story is based on Pushkin’s Jevgeni Onegin. After a previous collaboration with Lera Auerbach, John Neumeier asked Auerbach to compose the music again.
