‘Interdisciplinary’ is the more than apt code word for this part of the programme. In the iii workspace, composer-in-residence Myrto Nizami presents her most recent study for the music-theatre piece she is working on during her two-year residency in The Hague. The performance is a collaboration with sound technician Siavash Jafari and visual artist Luca Tornato Serafini, who are both highly experienced in interdisciplinary performances. They use light, video and spatialisation to add relief to the themes of identity and mask-wearing. Myrto’s on-stage team consists of the versatile singer Kristia Michael and members of Ensemble Modelo62.
In addition, the programme includes work by an artist who is a member of the iii workspace, Kevin Toksöz Fairbairn.
iii is a platform for interdisciplinary art, technology and performance in The Hague, which focusses on a collaborative approach. The name stands for ‘instrument inventors initiative’.
Kevin Toksöz Fairbairn is a performer, sound artist, and scholar working around the edges of installation, improvisation, composition, and craft. He performs concerts and builds installations showcasing a variety of hybrid acoustic instruments of his own design and construction.
Fairbairn will debut a new composition for his self-developed hybrid musical instrument: the chimeracord. This mutant monochord refracts its single string through an innovative brass resonating chamber that also superposes reed, brass, percussive elements in innovative polyphony. Designed for a single performer, the chimeracord seamlessly braids a multitude of disparate acoustic families into a unitary hybrid body.
