Guzmán Calzada Llorente (27) began his two-year residency with Festival Dag in de Branding in September 2022. He is a composer, guitarist and sound designer of Uruguayan-Spanish descent. During his residency at Festival Dag in de Branding, he is creating new music for various line-ups, based on ancient music from the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Strands of Polyphony #2 for recorder quartet and electronics is the first of his new works to see the light of day.
In a church in the Spanish village of Pastrana, Guzmán Calzada Llorente once saw something that made a lasting impression: the bellows of the church organ were taped with strips of sixteenth-century sheet music, collages of centuries-old manuscripts. This fascinating image provided the starting point for this performance in the Waalse Kerk: Calzada Llorente interweaves electronic sounds, the acoustics of the location and newly composed music based on old authentic sources. Recorder ensemble Delle Donne Consort follows a mapped-out trajectory through the church, allowing the audience to experience the space in different ways.
Composer Lucie Nezri has collaborated with Guzmán on the electronics of the piece.
