A new partner for Festival Dag in de Branding: Filmhuis The Hague. We welcome you with a cup of coffee! The programme kicks off with a discussion between Meriç Artaç, composer Petra Strahovnik and filmmaker Simone Bennett about the theme of this edition: the psychology behind fear and mistrust. Societal fear rears its head in many different ways: fear of terror attacks, fear of mentally ill people in the streets, fear of cybercrime and digital scams. Who can we trust anymore? What are the consequences for our society?
The discussion is followed by the screening of Motor, a short film by Simone Bennett about the gradually escalating mistrust between the residents of a block of flats. Seven people are shown in their most fearful moments. An old man shouts into his telephone, a respectable-looking lady does mysterious things with the post, a third resident eavesdrops on his neighbours. Without dialogue, the film creates a chilling sense of paranoia. This is enhanced by Simon Lenski’s dark soundtrack, which uses a violin that was custom-built by instrument builder Yuri Landman.
